The Kanchan variety of Amla (Indian Gooseberry) is a mid-season crop, typically harvested from mid-November to mid-December. The fruits are small, averaging around 30.2 grams in weight, and contain approximately 1.5% fiber content. This variety has medium ascorbic acid content and yields about 121 kg per tree.

Amla is a subtropical plant that prefers a dry climate and can be cultivated in various soil types, including slightly acidic to saline soils. It thrives best in fertile loamy soil with good drainage and can tolerate moderate alkaline conditions.

In India, Uttar Pradesh is the largest producer of Amla, accounting for approximately 35% of the country’s production. The peak harvesting season in India starts in mid-September and ends in December.

Amla is known for its high medicinal properties and is a rich source of Vitamin C. Its fruits are used in preparing various products such as pickles, shampoos, hair oils, dyes, tooth powders, and face creams.

For cultivation, it’s recommended to plant budded seedlings at a spacing of 4.5m x 4.5m during May-June. The pits should be 1 meter square and left open for 15-20 days for sun exposure before planting. Regular weeding and proper irrigation, especially during the summer months, are essential for optimal growth.

After harvesting, Amla fruits are graded and packed in bamboo baskets, crates, or wooden boxes. Quick transportation is crucial to minimize spoilage. Various products like Amla powder, churna, chavanprash, and sweet preserves are made from the fruits.
